The cases of eating disorders are steadily increasing with more and more people, especially young adults, feeling pressured to attain perfection. These disorders may begin as a diet which reaches alarming proportions and sometimes even life threatening situations. Anorexia is one such disorder which is reaching epidemic proportions.

Benefit from Quality Treatment from Specialists in the Field

Anorexia Nervosa is a life threatening eating disorder which needs to be treated as soon as it is diagnosed. Eating disorder treatment for anorexia helps patients recover from this dangerous health condition. This treatment should be provided in association with an experienced specialist only and preferably in a specialized center. Effective Anorexia requires specific experience and knowledge because anorexia is not only a physical ailment, it is a psychiatric disorder.

Treatment entails psychological evaluation followed by therapy. Therapy may be outpatient, day treatment or residential treatment, depending on the severity of the disorder. It involves therapy sessions with nutritionists, specialists and psychologists. Patients are encouraged to partake in individual and group therapy sessions, as well as to meet and talk to other similarly affected people. Even the family is involved in the treatment in order to make the outcome of treatment more effective.

Important to Identify the Disorder as Early as Possible

The goal of the eating-disorder treatment for anorexia is to help the client develop healthy coping skills, and to help them develop a sense of self identity and a full life. This can be ensured by follow up sessions post treatment. Part of the difficulty of anorexia treatment lies in the fact that most people afflicted by anorexia minimize or deny that they have a problem. They often feel that the only way they can survive or function is through the anorexia. The treatment team must be compassionate and patient to help the client find motivation to give up the only way they know to cope. Through developing a collaborative caring relationship, clients can begin to see alternatives to their eating disorder.

Article by Steve Nutt

As a DIY enthusiast you may have installed your own burglar alarm system. You probably wired up all your detectors and connected your panel to the electric – confident that if any burglars were to enter your property they would be detected and a siren would scare them off. If you want to take things one step further and have your system monitored by professional operators at an alarm monitoring center then this article is for you.

Perhaps the most difficult thing you will have to do is find a monitoring center that will deal with a DIYer directly. While there are a limited number of companies that will agree to do this, an Internet search for “DIY Alarm Monitoring” or similar should return enough results for you to find one of them.

As far as physical connections go, the only thing you need to do is connect your alarm panel to the telephone line in such a way that it is able to seize the line when it needs to dial the monitoring center. Your panel manual should provide technical instructions on how to do this.

The next step is for you to program your panel’s alarm monitoring settings. The terminology varies between different makes of alarm panel, so the following guidelines use generic terms:

In many alarm panels you have an option to “Enable Communications” and this is perhaps the single most important setting.

The next step is for you and your chosen alarm monitoring company to agree on an alarm protocol – also referred to as an alarm format. There are three groups of alarm formats – Pulse, FSK and DTMF. Unless there are very good reasons to do so, you should not choose a Pulse format as it can take up to 30 seconds for a single alarm signal to reach the alarm receiver at the Monitoring Center. The SIA format is an FSK protocol and is much faster at around 10 seconds for the first signal and around two seconds for subsequent signals, however, the most popular by far is Ademco Contact ID, which is a DTMF protocol.

Where Contact ID is selected, your alarm panel modem dials the phone number of an alarm receiver at the Monitoring Center, which answers the call and then receives a group of 16 DTMF tones over the telephone line. The protocol dictates what each of the digits mean and the Monitoring Center will have custom alarm monitoring software to decode each signal according to the protocol.

Program your panel to use the alarm protocol (format) agreed with your monitoring provider.

Program the primary and secondary receiver telephone numbers provided by your monitoring provider.

Program the Account Number allocated to you by the alarm monitoring provider as this will be used to uniquely identify your panel in the automation software system.

The above settings should be all that’s required to get your alarm panel sending signals to the receiver at the monitoring center in most cases, however, your panel may have many more options that could be important to the way you want your panel to perform in the event of a burglary. Take the time to read the manual in detail and seek the help of your monitoring provider if you are unsure of the consequences of changing any of the settings from their default values.

Thoroughly test your wiring and new settings by sending several alarm signals to the monitoring center and verify that each one was received correctly. One final piece of advice would be to program your alarm panel to send a periodic test signal at least once a month to ensure that your system is in working order.

Depression in men is as common as depression in women. It is a serious but treatable medical condition and as I mentioned before it is a brain disease that affects both men and women. Traditionally it is assumed that depression is a disease that affects women rather than men. But the real fact is that men suffer from depression just as often as women but they are less likely to ask for help. Contrary to the myth, depression is a treatable disease and it is better to seek help at the initial stages itself.

Depression in men: Silent sufferer

At this stage it is important for us to understand why men are less likely to ask help if they are suffering from depression. Actually the situation for men becomes bad because of the way they think about themselves as well as the way the society thinks about them. Men more often position themselves in the society as competitive, powerful and successful even if they are undergoing great personal turmoil which is affecting their psychological health. The reason for this behaviour comes from the traditional thinking in the society which does not approve of fragile or vulnerable men who talk about their feelings and emotions. In this kind of scenario men tend to feel that they should rely on themselves and therefore they are less likely to discuss their problems with their friends, loved ones or their Doctors.

Depression in men: Rejection by the partner

The irony of the situation is that this traditional view of how men should be “always tough and self-reliant” is also held by some women. It has been seen in many cases where when men own up their depression they actually get rejected by their partners. This is a great tragedy. Women need to pause and think about the scenario on what would happen if the situation gets reversed. In normal situations it has been seen that Men don’t leave their depressed partners to fend for themselves. Medical professionals also get caught in this web of hiding the facts because of the traditional views prevalent in the society. They may not diagnose depression in men when they should. This avoidance of the medical problem boomerangs in a later stage with serious consequences.

Depression in Men: Treatable disease

We need to accept the fact that depression has to be diagnosed and treated no matter if you are a woman or man and society should accept the reality that men are as prone to depression as women. Whether you’re a company executive, a construction worker, a writer, a police officer, or a student; whether you are rich or poor; surrounded by loved ones or alone; you are not immune to depression. Some factors, however, such as family history, undue stress, the loss of a loved one, or serious illnesses can make you more vulnerable to depression. The good news is that depression is treatable but if it is left untreated, it can lead to personal, family, and financial difficulties. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, however, most people recover. The darkness disappears, hope for the future returns, and energy and interest in life becomes stronger than ever. The biggest requirement for a person who is suffering from depression is acceptance of the disease and the biggest help that the family and the society can do is to stand solidly with the patient and create necessary environment for rapid and speedy recovery.

Depression in Men: Signs and symptoms of Depression

We have to understand that signs and symptoms of depression can vary from person to person. Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience only a few symptoms; some people suffer many. The severity of symptoms can again vary among individuals and also over time. Still we can generalize and make an outline of the various signs and symptoms that may be seen in a person in isolation or in combination. These signs and symptoms are

1. Persistent sadness, anxiousness, or “empty” mood
2. Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
3. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
4. Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
5. Losing interest in familial and social relationships
6. Decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down”
7. Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
8. Difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
9. Appetite and/or weight changes i.e. weight loss and loss of appetite or the opposite
10. Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
11. Restlessness, irritability
12. Persistent physical symptoms like weight loss, loss of appetite
13. loss of sex drive, lapses in personal hygiene such as not bathing or shaving as regularly

The above mentioned are the various signs and symptoms of depression which may manifest as behavioural changes noticed by other people who interact with a depressed person. Other people may feel that

1. The person is performing less well at work
2. The person is unusually quiet, unable to talk about things
3. The person is worrying about things more than usual and he is more irritable than usual
4. The person is complaining more about vague physical problems

Apart from this we need to study and analyze the following below mentioned topics to understand depression in men and initiate necessary remedial methods

1. Types of Depression
2. Treatment for Depression
3. Getting help from multiple resources
4. How do men cope with depression
5. Depression and relationships
6. Separation and Divorce and the incidence of depression in men
7. Sex and depression
8. Pregnancy and children and the incidence of depression in men
9. Unemployment and retirement and depression in men
10. Gay men and depression
11. Depression and suicide
12. Depression and violence
13. Helping men with depression
14. Tips to prevent depression in your man

So friends if you see the signs and symptoms of depression in either you or the man that you care about, then it is important to talk to your healthcare provider, or check getting help for more information.

Insomnia is unpleasant. You get out of bed the next day feeling groggy and not ready to face the day. You drive to work tired, and do your work tired. You may be irritable to your co-workers and argumentative with your spouse. Insomnia is no joke.

Insomnia can have many causes. Maybe you’re worrying about an unpaid bill, stressed with work, suffering another health complaint. Whatever the cause, everyone needs to sleep. Sleep helps the body to rejuvenate, the brain and body to rest. This article aims to show that although drug treatment works for insomnia the use of a regular bedtime ritual coupled with natural therapies should be first thing to try. After reading this article the reader should be able to make more objective decisions regarding their treatment for insomnia.

Treatment Of Insomnia By Pharmaceutical Drugs

Benzodiazepines: diazepam, flunitrazepam, flurazepam, loprazolam, lormetazepam, nitrazepam, temazepam.
Function: is to act on the central nervous system (CNS) to reduce anxiety and induce sleep.
Side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, addiction, impairment of short-term memory.

Antihistamines: diphenhydramine, doxylamine.
Function: to cause sedation.
Side effects: grogginess, clumsiness, dry mouth, constipation, visual disturbances.

Zolpidem Tartrate:
Function: acts on CNC to induce sleep.
Side effects: daytime drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness, clumsiness, headache, diarrhia, nausea.

Night-Time Ritual To Beat Insomnia

Here are five easy to follow steps to help you sleep better. Results should be seen within one month if the ‘ritual’ is followed everyday.

1) Cut out caffeine. Try to stop consuming caffeine altogether. If you find this impossible don’t have caffeine later than six hours before bed.

2) Cut out chocolate and sugary desserts. If you cannot manage this because of your ‘sweet tooth’ don’t eat later than six hours before bed.

3) Avoid alcohol and tobacco. If you can’t stop make sure you have neither within two hours of going to bed. Remember to never have alcohol to help you sleep, it can become a habit.

4) Do something that you enjoy to relax before bed. The obvious one is to have sex, meditate, yoga, a hot bath, or read for a while.

5) If you can’t sleep, get up. Go to another room and do something soothing to take your mind off the fact you can’t sleep. Make sure you don’t have an alcoholic or caffeine containing drink.

This list is not exhaustive yet if followed for one month great improvements in sleep patterns can be achieved.

Natural Therapies To Beat Insomnia

California Poppy: eschscholzia californica used in high doses is sedating, and used in lower doses can be used to treat anxiety.

Camomile: matricaria recutitia has been used for centuries to calm nerves and induce sleep.

Kava-Kava: is particularly effective when insomnia is a result of anxiety.

Lemon Balm: melissa officinalis has many medicinal uses. It treats insomnia and tastes good, which means it is not unpleasant to take.

Melatrol: is a proprietary blend of natural ingredients that form together to help you beat insomnia. These include:

5-HTP: is a short term for 5-Hydroxy Tryptophan. This is an important “precursor” to seratonin. A precursor is a substance that precedes, and is the source, of another substance. Seratonin is vital in many functions of the body. 5-HTP supports the production of melatonin, and assists in easing stress and anxiety. 5-HTP is a natural extract from the seeds of the Griffonia tree found in West African countries. Traditionally, the African people use all parts of the tree for various maladies. 5-HTP is generally well tolerated. However, light nausea and some mild gastric disturbances could occur at first. Usually these symptoms disappear quickly. If you experience continued disturbance, discuss this with your health care professional.
Melatonin

Just as the growth of plants is affected by the hours of daylight, so too, are animals and humans affected. Darkness triggers production of the hormone, melatonin, and causes the drowsy, sleepy feeling you get which is your body’s signal it’s time to go to sleep. Bright light halts the production of melatonin.

Melatonin: is produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It can also be produced by bone marrow cells, the retina, and the gastrointestinal tract. Even plants, such as rice, produce
melatonin. When you eat rice or other foods containing melatonin, it will reach and bind to sites in the brain.

In addition to helping you sleep, melatonin is an antioxidant. It helps protect DNA, protects the brain, and may play a role in increasing longevity. Melatonin is safe for the human body even when taken over a period of time. However, like all supplements, caution is advised against taking more than directed. High doses can cause complications.
Valerian Root

Valerian: has been used to improve people’s lives since the times of ancient Greece and Rome. Hippocrates discussed its benefits, and Galen prescribed Valerian as a remedy for insomnia.

Only the roots, rhizomes and stolons (A horizontal stem which grows along the surface of the soil) of the plants are used. The flowers of Valerian are quite sweet-smelling, and can perfume your whole garden.

On the other hand, the dried root has a pungent, unpleasant smell some people say is like “dirty socks.” Herbalists often suggest Valerian root to people who are nervous, anxious, and not sleeping well.
Gamma Amino Butyric Acid

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid: is usually called GABA. It is an amino acid necessary for the action of certain cells. In adults, it is inhibitory in action. That is, it inhibits certain substances from entering the cells. It’s found primarily in the tissues of the nervous system.

GABA functions as a neurotransmitter to prevent certain neurons from over-reacting. This makes it possible for the brain to relax, and reduces stress and anxiety.
Rhodiola Rosea Extract

Rhodiola Rosea: sometimes called “golden root” or “roseroot”, grows in the dry sandy areas of high mountains from Iceland through Siberia.

It was not named Rosea for its flower, but for the sweet, rose-like fragrance of the freshly cut root.

Until the 1960s Rhodiola rosea was not well known in this country. For many years, the people of the northern latitudes kept it a secret.

In 1725, the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus gave the herb its modern name. It was later determined that the plant extract was a powerful adaptogen.

The term adaptogen is used by herbalists to refer to a natural herb product that is proposed to increase the body’s resistance to stress and anxiety. In the past, they have been called “rejuvenating herbs.”
Passion Flower

The Passion Flower: is a frequent sight in many gardens. It is a delightful vine, which can climb to 30 feet, and is covered with purple and white flowers during the blooming season.

The unique flowers give the plant its name. In 1609 Jacomo Bosio, a monk and scholar in Rome, thought the shape of the flowers resembled the crown of thorns put upon the head of Jesus. He felt it represented the mysteries of the cross and the passion of Jesus.

Passion Flower was used for centuries for people with anxiety, sleeplessness, and “hysteria.” Herbalists today still use Passion Flower for people with occasional sleep problems, tension and nervousness.

It is said that Passion Flower will bring sweet dreams to the user, but there is no scientific evidence to support this.

There is no doubt that the pharmaceutical drugs will help you sleep. However, there are some quite serious side effects and some can be habit-forming (addictive).

Before going the pharmaceutical way it would seem that trying a night-time ritual and using natural therapies available would be worth a try for at least a month.

The reader should now have some knowledge about therapies available for insomnia and, as such, should be able to make more objective decisions regarding their own treatment for insomnia.

Anorexia Nervosa has been a problem by men and women around the world. This problem has been triggered by psychological factors, such as depression, insecurity and being an obsessive compulsive person specifically being a perfectionist.

So how do we deal with such sickness? how do we cure it? Before knowing how to treat this sickness, we should know what kind of Anorexia Nervosa you have. There are two types of Anorexia Nervosa that we must know before we treat them;

1. Restricting Type -

This type of anorexia is achieving weight loss through restricting calories. Restricting anorexics follow drastic diets, counts calories while eating or when they are planning to eat, they exercise excessively and are not contented with the results of their exercise. Restricting anorexics find dieting very important and they practice unsual food behaviors. This type of anorexia problem often occurs to women during their mid-adolescent age (15-20), and for men it happens when they are 25-32 years old.

2. Purging Type -

This is the other type of anorexic problem. The people who suffer this type of problem vomits after eating the food that they eat. Like the restricting type, they consider weight loss is important and vital to their means of livng. Losing weight makes them happy, and when they feel that they are full, they are usually depressed and if they can’t vomit, they will use Laxatives and Diuretics. Purging type of anorexics also do excessive exercise and also have unusual food behaviors, they commonly happen to adolescent men and women at the age of 13-20.

Knowing the two types of Anorexia Nervosa is very important, this will help guide you so that you will have an effective and successful recovery.

Cysts on the ovaries are closed baglike bulks which forms within the ovaries. An ovarian cyst evolves during menstrual cycles. The majority of growths are part of the monthly period process — which is known as functional growths. They happen during ovulation and they also vanish after a period of time.

Simple cysts consist of fluid or solid materials when the egg cell isn’t launched during ovulation. Growths may cause blood loss and discomfort but could end up being handled via surgical treatment. During ovulation, endocrine is released within the ovary, follicles and little bags where eggs are created.

Whenever eggs are finally shaped the follicles are damaged to release the eggs. The little bags that don’t have eggs are known as corpus luteum but when these follicles or bags aren’t damaged, they form as ovarian growths. You will find different types of ovarian growths below.

Follicular cysts — this is shaped when follicles or bulk that contain egg cells develop and don’t break to release the egg cell.

Corpus Luteum cysts — this is shaped during the menstrual period. When the egg cell isn’t fertilized, this particular cyst vanishes after a while.

Dermoid cysts — this is related to tissue such as the skin, hair and tooth. This also happens in the ovary’s germ tissue, and they are obvious during adulthood.

Signs and symptoms for ovarian cysts may go undetectable till they’re discovered during health-related evaluation. During giving birth, injury or intercourse, they might split and could show symptoms for example:

Intense discomfort in the belly

Excessive blood loss internally

Agonizing intercourse

Weight gain

Inability to conceive a child

Heavy monthly flow

Agonizing bowel movement

Alterations in the monthly period cycle

Proper diagnosis of ovarian cysts consists of bodily evaluation, lab exams and knowledge about the health background of the affected person. Lab exams consist of CBC and pregnancy check. Diagnostic test may also be given such as ultrasound examination, laparoscopy, and x-ray.

With respect to the kind, dimension and placement of growths, treatment for ovarian cysts also consider the age of the individual. For a “functional cyst”, a doctor might suggest waiting and seeing if the growths might vanish during a period of time since they usually will.

For polycystic kind, prescriptions can vary appropriately. For cyst adenomas, endometrial, and dermoid cysts, treatment methods are generally completed with surgical treatment. Laparoscopy is going to be carried out on the cysts

If you are experiencing some of the symptoms listed above, it’s important that you take the time to see if you have an ovarian cyst. It’s very important not to put this off.

When you think of behavior disorders the first thought is to go to the definition given in the DSMIV or to go off of what a doctor has told you. The diagnoses rely on chemical imbalances or neurological difficulties. I on the other hand, after working in a behavior disorder room for over three years, have seen another form of behavior disorder. After observing these students on a regular basis, I have begun to see the negative impact that video games can have on a student’s behavior.

In thinking about this subject I also came across a journal article that seems to help with the knowledge of what our society is doing to our children. This research study showed how school performance and behavior is negatively affected by children playing video games. My first reaction to this was that when you look at boys and girls who play video games with violence of any form, it seems that society has made this out to be a norm and we, as parents, should be ok with allowing our children to play these games. As a mother of four boys, my husband and I make sure that we watch the rating of the game before making any purchases of games for our children. This seems to be the easiest way to watch what games end up in our children’s hands. However, when your child goes to a friend’s house you do not know what that child’s parents allow him/her to have. The research journal tries to find the correlation between video game playing and school performance and behaviors. “Overall, the expected pattern emerged. Time spent playing video games was negatively related to one school performance variable and positively related to aggression and externalizing behavior,” (Hastings, 2009). Playing video games with violent tendencies seems to affect more boys than girls. Girls would rather play learning video games opposed to violent video games.

According to Hastings (2009), parental monitoring seems to have more of an impact on girls’ behavior and school outcomes. When parents pay attention to what their children are getting their hands on it is more likely that the games will be less harmful to the children’s behaviors. Those parents who do not care what their kids play are obviously not going to be concerned with their children’s grades either. Again as a mother, my husband and I are very aware of our children’s grades, behaviors, and school performance. This seems to make a great difference in their world. Parents that do not take the time to care about these factors generally give in and let their children do whatever they want to do. Then how can you have children who know their parents care about what they do in school and what they do outside of school? This makes me believe that parts of the behaviors children pick up on are learned. I can see how these games can negatively be affecting children, making them act out in ways that may be taken out of context, earning a diagnosis of a behavior disorder by a medical doctor.

My past experience working in a behavior disorder classroom has shown me other ways that children have “learned” behaviors as well. These are behaviors they watch their parents commit or are told this is how they should act, which then in turn teaches kids the wrong way to handle situations. I have a case in which I will only use the first name of the student, Jessie. Jessie was an incredibly talented child with fabulous artistic ability and every time we got close to getting Jessie ready to go out and leave our program, Jessie became very agitated and began having his behaviors all over again. It was like going back to square one. When we got down to the bottom of things we found out that Jessie was being told to act out again, but did not want to. Jessie did these things because his parents guilted him into it by telling him that if he left our program they would lose all of their income as the family depended on Jessie’s disability check from the state. This is how the family functioned and was able to meet any demands that they had. They were living off of Jessie. Jessie did what he thought was right because he was taught that if he had behavioral problems then he would not leave our program. These are perfect examples of learned behaviors.

I do know that some behavior disorders are not learned; they are programmed that way in the child’s system. However, I do believe from some of my past experience that these behavior problems can also be learned by watching examples. In any case most of the true diagnosed behavior disorders are meant to help teachers and IEP teams figure out the best ways to handle students who have those true behavior disorders. In most cases everyone can work together to address the behavior and work with the student. Once this is accomplished the student can work toward handling the anger or other issue appropriately to gain control of himself/herself and learn to function without assistance. Until this happens we have special education programs, Behavior Intervention Plans, associates, and other such programs to help these kids get where they need to be. Addressing these problems as they occur, and addressing them together, is the best way to accomplish this.

Hastings, E. C., Karas, T. L., Winsler, A., Way, E., Madigan, A., & Tyler, S.

Birth defects and genetic disorders place a huge economic and emotional burden on parents. Therefore many tests have been developed to diagnose certain birth and genetic defects in the antenatal period. The following are the modalities used to diagnose birth defects and genetic disorders.

These tests with the exception of ultrasound require specialised centres and expertise. These tests fall in two broad categories: Screening and confirmatory tests.

Screening tests do not diagnose a condition, but they do tell if there is an increased risk for a disease or condition. The common screening tests that are offered to women include:-

· First trimester screening- A combination of ultrasound and blood tests to determine risk of Down’s syndrome and Trisomy 18. 10-14 weeks is an appropriate time frame for these tests.

· Maternal serum screening- These are a group of three or four blood tests done on the mother’s serum sample to diagnose Down’s syndrome and neural tube defects. These are commonly called the Triple or Quad test and the test panel includes the following assays: AFP, HCG, Estriol, and Inhibin-A.

· Cystic fibrosis testing- Cystic fibrosis is a serious genetic disorder with a frequency of 1:500 live births in USA. A number of tests have been designed for diagnosis of CF in the antenatal period. Most of these tests depend upon detection of a specific mutation that leads to cystic fibrosis.

· Detailed ultrasound exam- All pregnant women between 16-20 weeks are subjected to a detailed ultrasound exam. This exam focuses on detecting congenital abnormalities and hence is named the congenital abnormality scan. During this scan the foetus is scanned for signs of neural tube defects, defects of the kidneys and heart, defects of the abdominal wall and bones.

· Amniocentesis- This is a procedure in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is aspirated through a needle passed through the abdominal wall and uterus. This fluid is then analysed for enzymes and chemicals which indicate the presence of a genetic condition. The amniotic fluid also contains foetal cells which can be karyotyped to detect chromosomal abnormalities. This test is usually done between 15-20 weeks and caries a slight risk of miscarriage.

· Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)-This procedure is usually done between weeks 10 and 12 of pregnancy and is highly accurate in diagnosis of birth defects and genetic disorders. Hence this is reserved as a confirmatory test. In this test a small sample from the chorionic villus is analysed for abnormalities. This test is also associated with a risk of miscarriage.
